Sound Strategies for Sustainable
Communities
Scenic Byways
Is
your scenic byway…
- Developing
or implementing a corridor management plan?
- Seeking
success in fundraising?
- Striving
to develop a strong byway organization?
If
you are involved with a state or nationally- designated scenic byway,
you know that it is up to local communities---people who live and work
near
the byway---to develop and manage the scenic byway designation. While
every
byway is different, most communities are eager to recognize, preserve,
and enhance the corridor’s special qualities, as well as to promote the
corridor to visitors and attract economic benefits.
Our services help byway communities with community design,
transportation and land use planning, smart growth, strategic
planning, fundraising, organizational development, and more. We have extensive experience
in
planning for scenic byways at the local, state, and national levels.

About
Scenic Byways
The National Scenic Byways Program is
part of the U.S. Department of
Transportation, Federal Highway Administration. The program,
established by Congress in 1991, is a grassroots collaborative effort
to help communities preserve the nation’s distinctive routes and
promote tourism and economic development along them.
Selected for
designation from applications submitted by local communities, the U.S.
Secretary of Transportation recognizes certain roads as All-American
Roads or National Scenic Byways based on one or more outstanding
archeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational and scenic
qualities.
There are currently 125 America's Byways
in 44 States,
comprised of 98 National Scenic Byways and 27 All-American Roads.
Additionally, most
states have state-level versions of the program with many state
scenic byways.
Since 1992, the National Scenic Byways
Program has provided almost
$300,000,000 in discretionary grants for national scenic byway projects
or a state-designated scenic byway and for planning, designing, and
developing state scenic byway programs. There are national and/or state
scenic byways in the 50 states, Puerto Rico and the District of
Columbia.
