Sound Strategies for Sustainable
Communities
Land Use, Smart Growth, and Historic
Preservation
Land use
choices are central to a community’s growth, sustainability, and sense
of place. Many places, concerned
about the rapid, unplanned transformation of their
cities, suburbs, small towns, and rural communities, are choosing
smart growth over sprawl development in an effort
to
undertake a more deliberate approach to growth.
Smart growth policies and programs typically seek to channel economic
development to
areas best served by existing infrastructure, while finding ways to
protect valuable natural and cultural resources. Preserving and
restoring a community's historic architectural assets, often a
component of smart growth initiatives, is
a challenging but worthwhile venture that helps to maintain an
invaluable sense of place.
We can help
communities with land use and historic preservation
planning, smart growth strategies, and resource assessments.
